Are You Willing to Change?

I often hear from clients that they wish things were different. That desired difference is rarely about money or their business; it usually has something to do with their family. They wish they had more time with their kids, a better relationship with a sibling, more honest dialogue as a family, or a stronger connection with their spouse.

When I hear this, I think of a quote I read a while back: What are you willing to change to achieve what you want?

We all have things we want to change in our lives, but if you don’t value it enough or want it bad enough, you’re not going to get the change. It’s that simple. If you want to see your children more often, then you need to prioritize seeing your children more often. If you want a better relationship with your spouse, then you need to make the changes in your life that will facilitate a better relationship with your spouse – odds are, you know what those are. If you want to have a closer relationship with a sibling, then invest in that relationship by being available and present. This is about tradeoffs and values.

If you really want something to change, own it. Tell the other person what you want to change and how you’re going to change to help make it happen.

"I'm starting with the man in the mirror...I'm asking him to change his ways...Take a look at yourself and then make a change."
